The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Sept. 4, edition that a think tank promoting advanced manufacturing in Ontario is challenging economic estimates from Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe that suggest the canola industry has greater economic benefits than the auto sector. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that Prime Minister Mark Carney is under pressure to lift tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, which were imposed to protect the Canadian auto industry. This situation has created a conflict between the auto and canola industries. A study by the Canola Council of Canada reports that canola generates $43.7-billion in economic activity and supports 206,000 jobs in Canada. However, the Trillium Network for Advanced Manufacturing believes that these figures overstate the direct and indirect economic impacts of canola. Mr. Moe stated in August that the Canadian canola industry is worth $43-billion to $45-billion and employs over 200,000 people, making it larger than the combined steel, aluminum and car manufacturing industries. In 2024, the Canadian auto assembly and parts sectors contributed $19.2-billion to GDP and employed 118,120 people, while the canola industry contributed $5-billion and employed 21,576 people.
