The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Sept. 8, edition that Canada has historically maintained a close relationship with the United States, advocating for open borders and free trade. The Globe's John Ibbitson writes that given the current political climate, however, and the backsliding of U.S. democracy, Canada must consider distancing itself economically, culturally and militarily. The relationship has evolved from a protective stance, as seen in John A. Macdonald's National Policy, to co-operative agreements like the auto pact and the free-trade agreement. While this co-operation has benefited Canada's economy and security, the rise of white, populist nationalism in the U.S. -- characterized by figures like Donald Trump -- poses significant risks. This nationalism has led to attacks on democratic institutions, investigations of political opponents and a militarization of cities. A recent poll indicates that a majority of Americans believe democracy is at risk. To ensure its survival, Canada must navigate a period of separation from the U.S. Canadians are deliberately distancing themselves from Mr. Trump's America. The Globe says our federal and provincial governments must do the same.
