Post says Linamar, others told tariff risk on the rise

The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that the price and availability of new cars and trucks in Canada have seen minimal changes since the U.S. trade war began, but that may soon change. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that while consumers have not felt the impact much -- thanks to stockpiling and increased imports from Mexico -- a recent report from Desrosiers Automotive Consultants indicates that changes are on the horizon. Desrosiers director Andrew King said: "The tariffs will increase some vehicle prices for sure. However, it is not equal across the board." Over all, he estimated that less than 9 per cent of the vehicles imported to Canada face tariffs. That is in part because Canada enacted a porous tariff policy in April. It imposes a 25-per-cent duty on U.S.-made vehicles that do not comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), and on the non-Canadian and non-Mexican parts within a U.S.-made, CUSMA-compliant vehicle. Canada also granted the five automakers that manufacture vehicles in this country "remission orders" that allow them to offset the tariffs further. "That means they pay less (or maybe zero) Canadian counter tariffs," Mr. King said.
