The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that given the rapid spread of Chinese electric vehicles in the developing world, where the bulk of future global demand will originate, the long-term future of the internal combustion engine industry looks questionable. Guest columnist John Rapley writes that add in the effects of the new obstacles to the U.S. market and the Canadian auto industry's crisis may be existential. At the least, Ontario's carmaking colossus will have to reinvent itself to have a long-term future. Nevertheless, in its showdown with the United States, Canada does have some cards up its sleeve. Most notably, Canadians remain pretty unified on the issues at hand, whereas the U.S. is deeply divided. As this dispute wears on, it is likely the domestic pressure on Mr. Trump will rise faster than that on Prime Minister Mark Carney. Playing for time is not a strategy, but it may nonetheless be a useful tactic in Mr. Carney's arsenal. Although Canada can reduce its dependence on the U.S., Canada cannot escape it, and to withstand a bully, you do not need to beat it; you only need to make its bullying sufficiently unpleasant that it turns its attention elsewhere. That may yet work.
