The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that electric vehicle sales are collapsing, and with U.S. tariffs, there is a growing belief that Canada's ambition to become an EV manufacturing hub is fading. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that General Motors announced it will end production of its Brightdrop electric delivery van, leaving 1,000 workers in Ingersoll, Ont., uncertain about their future. Meanwhile, Stellantis confirmed it will not begin EV production at its Brampton assembly plant next year as planned, leading to potential legal action from Ottawa. More than half of the 13 EV supply chain or battery-related projects in Canada identified by the Parliamentary Budget Office in June, 2024, have been scrapped, scaled back or delayed, with most remaining as ideas without construction starting. "It's obviously been compromised by what's happening in the States," says Global Automakers of Canada (GAC) chief David Adams. GAC is a lobby group for Honda and other automakers with manufacturing operations in Canada. Over all, Mr. Adams and others say there is little doubt that EVs still represent the automotive technology of the future, but the pace of adoption may be slower than anticipated.
