The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney is eager to sell more energy and food to Asia, softening some of the blow from the trade war with the United States. Contributing columnist John Rapley writes that at some point the government will come under pressure from China to scrap its electric-vehicle tariffs. China is leading an energy revolution across much of the world, particularly in developing countries, and Canada should decide whether and how it wants to fit into this. Opening the market to Chinese EVs would raise potentially existential questions for Ontario's legacy auto industry, but sooner or later these will need to be faced. As Mr. Carney noted while on tour, nostalgia is not a strategy. Other countries are looking to revive their auto industries by partnering with Chinese companies. As delicate as that would be for Canada, it is an option the government may not want to remove from the table. The good news is that business leaders appear to be solidly behind the Prime Minister's strategy: Reportedly, a record number of Canadians will be exhibiting at next week's China International Import Expo. The world is changing, and this time, Canada is not being complacent.
