The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Ottawa plans to announce changes to its electric-vehicle sales mandate this winter. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe says that starting next year, manufacturers were expected to ensure that 20 per cent of new cars and light-duty trucks sold are zero-emission vehicles, with targets increasing to 60 per cent by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2035. However, Prime Minister Mark Carney recently paused the mandate's rollout for 2026 and initiated a 60-day review. He exempted carmakers from the sales targets for a year due to U.S. tariffs affecting Canada's auto sector. The government will accept feedback until Tuesday night, marking the end of the 60 days. The Environment Ministry aims to publish the review results by year's end and finalize any changes to the EV mandate by late 2026. Canada's automakers have long said the mandate set out unrealistic targets they could not possibly meet, given a lack of demand. EV sales in Canada hit a monthly high of 18 per cent last year when the government was offering consumer rebates of up to $5,000. Sales, however, plunged after the government abruptly ended the popular rebate program when its funding ran out.
