The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Ontario Premier Doug Ford is cautioning Prime Minister Mark Carney about lowering Canada's 100-per-cent tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles during his upcoming trip to Beijing. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that Mr. Ford said China should establish EV factories in Ontario, noting that a Chinese EV maker opened an electric-bus assembly plant in Newmarket, Ont., in 2019. Canada sparked a trade war with China in 2024 by imposing high tariffs on Chinese EVs, aligning with the U.S. under President Joe Biden. Beijing responded with its own hefty tariffs. Mr. Carney heads to China Jan. 13 and will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the visit. The PM aims to improve ties with Beijing following a significant diplomatic rift, as Canada seeks new export markets to lessen dependence on a protectionist United States. Years of barring state-owned Chinese companies from investing or operating in Canada have further strained relations. The Chinese embassy conditionally linked the removal of its tariffs to Canada eliminating its EV tariff on Chinese vehicles. Mr. Ford said he does not want imported cars. He said: "We can't back down. Simple as that."
