The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that the United States trade war is impacting small and mid-sized auto companies in Ontario, with almost 75 per cent reporting revenue losses in the past year, according to a Western University Ivey business school report. The Post's Jonathan Juha writes that revenue declined 68 per cent among the 28 surveyed firms with up to 500 employees that produce car components, with half saying the drop was larger than 10 per cent. Despite the hit, the majority of companies said they're still profitable or breaking even, but they've had to turn to drastic measures, such as cutting jobs or postponing capital investment. "These are short-term measures the firms are doing, in part, because some of them have their back against the wall," said assistant professor Romel Mostafa at Ivey and one of the study authors. "But, if you"re putting off investments, if you're cutting back on labour, this is going to affect, down the road, potentially your competitiveness as well, so that is the challenge." The Ivey study said only about 29 per cent of companies surveyed have diversified outside the auto sector. Mr. Mostafa says, "We're going to come out ahead if we get our ducks lined up."
