The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, Nov. 3, edition that President Donald Trump says a U.S.-Canada trade deal is "very close" after discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney.
A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Trump said, "We have the concept of a very good deal," repeating his contention that the United States has been "losing money for many years" in trade with Canada. Mr. Trump and Mr. Carney offered the most upbeat outlook on trade talks since they collapsed acrimoniously in August.
On Sunday Mr. Carney said he spoke with Mr. Trump, building on "recent constructive discussions" on the outlines of a deal that would create jobs, boost affordability for families and "fully respect Canada's languages, culture and sovereignty." Mr. Carney said, "Our teams will now be working in the coming weeks to deliver that outcome."
Mr. Trump's tariff policies have spurred the PM to reduce Canadian dependence on trade with the U.S. Last week, he hosted top European Union officials in Montreal as part of the effort to deepen ties with non-U.S. trade partners.
After the EU meeting, Mr. Carney hinted that the outcome of the U.S. midterms wouldn't have much of an impact to shift Mr. Trump's policy stance.
