The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that earlier this month, Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted a crucial issue: Canada's overreliance on the U.S. for defence and national security. The Globe's guest columnist Curtis McCord writes that with the U.S. becoming an increasingly unreliable ally, it is essential for Canada to diversify, including reducing U.S. dominance over its digital infrastructure. This infrastructure, which includes cables connecting homes to the Internet and data centres, is largely controlled by major U.S. firms like Microsoft and Amazon. These companies manage the systems Canadians depend on for communication, business and on-line purchases. The concentration of Canada's digital economy on U.S. firms poses a significant risk to national security. If a U.S. administration used this infrastructure as leverage, it could lead to prolonged outages of services like Google Suite, Microsoft Azure or Amazon AWS, crippling Canada's economy and halting government work, leaving Canadians vulnerable. Resilience, or the ability to withstand shocks, is essential for security. Canada's infrastructure will be more resilient and secure if control switches are in more hands and closer to home.
