Globe says Microsoft-backed OpenAI's Altman apologizes

2026-04-27 08:09 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, April 25, edition that Sam Altman, chief executive officer of Microsoft-backed OpenAI, has apologized for the company's role in the Tumbler Ridge, B.C. mass shooting, which left nine dead on Feb. 10. The Globe's Justine Hunter writes that the apology was requested by B.C. Premier David Eby after discussions with Mr. Altman and Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka. Conversations on OpenAI's ChatGPT platform had raised concerns months prior but were not reported to law enforcement. Mr. Altman wrote in a letter dated April 23, and publicly released on Friday: "I am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June. While I know words can never be enough, I believe an apology is necessary to recognize the harm and irreversible loss your community has suffered." Mr. Eby, in a social-media post Friday, said the statement is not enough. He wrote, "The apology is necessary, and yet grossly insufficient for the devastation done to the families of Tumbler Ridge." The family of a girl critically injured in the shooting is suing over the company's failure to alert authorities. Mr. Altman did not, in his letter, commit to any specific action.
