The National Post reports in its Wednesday edition that OpenAI's Sam Altman testified he was "extremely uncomfortable" with Elon Musk's insistence that he have complete control over a proposed for-profit subsidiary of OpenAI in 2017. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Altman told jurors Mr. Musk sought control of the entity during its early days but refused to sign a contract to that effect, frustrating his co-founders. Mr. Altman said, "A particularly hair-raising moment was when my co-founders asked Mr. Musk, 'If you have control, what happens when you die?' He said something like, 'I haven't thought about it a ton, but maybe I should pass it to my children.' I didn't feel comfortable with that." Mr. Altman took the witness stand Tuesday in the final days of the high-profile trial. Mr. Musk is suing, claiming Mr. Altman and company president Greg Brockman sought to enrich themselves by abandoning the non-profit's altruistic mission and converting it into a for-profit business with billions of dollars in investments from Microsoft. Mr. Musk previously testified that he started losing confidence in Mr. Altman and Mr. Brockman during the 2017 negotiations about OpenAI's future.
