The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Methanex is acquiring OCI Global's international methanol business in a $2.05-billion deal, which will expand the Canadian-based company's presence in the U.S. (all figures U.S.). The Globe's Brent Jang writes that in this deal, Methanex will pay $1.15-billion in cash, issue $450-million in Methanex shares, and take on OCI's $450-million in debt and leases. As a result of the acquisition, OCI will own a 13-per-cent interest in Methanex, pending regulatory approval. The deal came after OCI launched a strategic review in the spring of 2023 of its methanol assets, says OCI chairman Nassef Sawiris, an Egyptian billionaire who co-owns the Aston Villa FC soccer team in England's Premier League. Raymond James analyst Steve Hansen says in a note about Methanex: "We're inclined to view the deal as both strategic and attractive. The obvious tradeoff is the company's long-awaited buyback plan is likely now shelved." The transaction features OCI's interest in two methanol plants in Beaumont, Tex., including one that also produces ammonia. Scotia Capital analyst Ben Isaacson says the assets to be purchased include a 50-per-cent interest in the Natgasoline facility in Beaumont.
