Globe says RBC's HSBC takeover is good for competition

Also In the News (C-HSB) HSBC Bank Canada

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the Rogers-Shaw controversy might not be the best example of how Canada's competition laws need reform. Guest columnist Leonard Waverman writes that there is also the proposed RBC-HSBC deal. Mr. Waverman says that as someone who has lived and worked in the United States, Britain and France, he uses foreign-currency accounts, and Canada's big banks have traditionally offered him little choice. So when British multinational HSBC decided to abandon Canada, he was concerned. Looking more closely, however, he came to like the deal. With RBC as the buyer, the other big Canadian banks will now fight harder for customers like him, who need better, globally oriented banking services. Losing a bank with just 2-per-cent market share will not make the sector less competitive. This is nothing like the banking megamergers that were proposed in the late-1990s or the Rogers-Shaw deal. The RBC's proposed takeover of HSBC does little to change banking competition in Canada. This is a transaction to buy a minor player that put itself up for sale in a competitive industry. Canadians should be wary of commentators trying to stick the square peg of competition law where it does not fit.
