The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Terry Fox and Chinyere Eni have a lot in common. The Globe's Jameson Berkow writes that the legendary Canadian marathoner and the senior RBC executive each lost a leg to the same rare form of bone cancer at a young age. But their similarities run far deeper than mere skin and bone. Neither of them was defeated by their diagnosis. Mr. Fox ran 5,373 kilometres in his 1980 Marathon of Hope, raising millions for cancer research. While Ms. Eni did not travel as far, as a founder and five-time finisher of the Princess Margaret Ride to Conquer Cancer she has been similarly devoted: cycling more than 1,000 kilometres and personally raising several hundred thousand dollars. The daughter of a Cree woman who survived the residential-school system and a Nigerian Igbo man who survived the Biafran war in the late 1960s, Ms. Eni overcame not just osteogenic sarcoma, but adversity and even assault while rising through the ranks of RBC to attain her current role as executive head of RBC Origins, the lender's indigenous market strategy and indigenous banking business. Throughout it all, Ms. Eni maintained the same kind of unwaveringly positive outlook for which Mr. Fox was famous.
