The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that RBC Capital's Global Financials Research Group has named Sun Life Financial one of its "Best Stock Ideas." The Globe's David Leeder writes that RBC analyst Darko Mihelic rates Sun Life Financial "outperform," with a share target of $76. Mr. Mihelic says in a note: "As of Q3/23, Sun Life's underlying ROE was 17.7 per cent, the highest ROE among the Canadian lifecos in the quarter. Sun Life's medium-term ROE target of 18 per cent-plus is also the highest among the Canadian lifecos. We assume an underlying ROE of 17.8 per cent in 2024 and 18.2 per cent in 2025. We also believe Sun Life's earnings volatility over time will be lower than the peer average, justifying a higher valuation multiple versus peers." The Globe reported on May 16 that Mr. Mihelic had elevated his recommendation for Sun Life to "outperform" from "sector perform." It was then worth $66.32. The Globe reported on Aug. 31 that guest columnist Sean Pugliese recommended buying Sun Life in the Number Cruncher column when it could be had for $65.91. The Globe reported on Nov. 15 that TD Securities analyst Mario Mendonca had reaffirmed his "hold" recommendation for Sun Life. It was then worth $68.54.
