The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that OPEC's secretary-general, Haitham al-Ghais, stated that there is no peak in oil demand anticipated. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that he criticized the International Energy Agency for its inconsistent policies, which he believes hinder essential investments in oil and gas. OPEC projects global oil demand will exceed 120 million barrels a day by 2050. Mr. al-Ghais said, "In our long-term projections, we see the forecast that global primary energy demand is going to increase by a staggering 44 per cent from now to 2050. ... Our forecasts are not based on ideology. They are based on data and analysis of data, and they clearly indicate that oil would remain an integral part of the energy mix at around 30 per cent still in 2050." He added that meeting that ever-rising demand will only be possible with adequate, timely and necessary investments in the oil industry. However, comments by the IEA have threatened those investments, he said. Mr. al-Ghais noted that IEA reports from 2017 to 2020 deemed oil crucial for global energy security, but in 2021, the agency advised against new oil and gas investments. Now, it is urging investment in the oil industry once more.
