The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, June 12, edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith stated that her government is collaborating with oil companies to propose a new pipeline to the West Coast, urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to act in good faith on the matter. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that the Alberta government has suggested a quid pro quo, where oil companies would commit to the Pathways Alliance carbon-capture project if an oil pipeline gets approved. Ms. Smith on Wednesday emphasized the need for new pipelines to transport Alberta's oil and gas to the coasts for overseas access. British Columbia's Energy Minister, Adrian Dix, recently dismissed the feasibility and high costs of a new pipeline in the province. Ms. Smith, however, said on Wednesday that she is confident she can convince B.C. Premier David Eby of the merits of an oil pipeline. Ms. Smith's ultimate goal is to get an oil pipeline onto a list of major infrastructure projects being developed by the federal government. Ms. Smith said she also wants to see the Pathways Alliance carbon-capture project on that list. MEG Energy chief Darlene Gates says Ottawa appears more open to substantial discussions about energy policy.
