The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, June 23, edition that a U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear sites could surge oil prices and prompt investors to seek safety. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that Middle East stock markets appeared to expect a benign outcome despite Iran's missile attacks on Israel. President Donald Trump hailed the attack as "a spectacular military success," claiming Iran's nuclear facilities were "obliterated," and warned of further military action if Iran does not agree to peace. Iran said it reserves all options for self-defence, warning of "everlasting consequences." Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran was weighing its options for retaliation. Investors said they expected U.S. involvement would cause a stock market sell-off and a possible bid for the dollar and other safe-haven assets when major markets reopen, but also said much uncertainty remained. Potomac River Capital's Mark Spindel said: "I think the markets are going to be initially alarmed, and I think oil will open higher. ... I think the uncertainty is going to blanket the markets, as now Americans everywhere are going to be exposed. It's going to raise uncertainty and volatility, particularly in oil."
