The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, June 28, edition that the recent conflict in the Middle East highlights the changing dynamics of the world economy, particularly regarding oil prices. The Globe's guest columnist John Rapley writes that despite the anxiety surrounding the war, global oil prices have remained stable. This contrasts sharply with the past, when Mideast conflicts led to soaring oil prices and economic recessions. The current situation indicates a decreased reliance on oil, with countries increasingly transitioning away from it, even as some market volatility persists. This casts a new light on recent lobbying by the oil industry about the need for Canada to ease up on its decarbonization goals. Mr. Raply say using Canada's export revenues to support the industries that will eventually replace it offers itself as a solution. Canada has a unique opportunity. Despite a poor trade ranking, its research and innovation indices rank it among the world's best, showing the country has plenty of innovators. Canada's start-up ecosystem is a ripe fruit waiting to be picked. Canada needs to recycle its resource export revenues into developing new industries, not perpetuating old ones.
