The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that never has a president swept to power pledging such a rapid expansion of oil and gas drilling in the United States as Donald Trump. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that despite Mr. Trump ordering his administration to unearth the nation's vast reserves of petroleum, analysts say fossil fuel production is only a tad above Biden administration levels of production. The price of a barrel of oil has tumbled from about $75 (U.S.) when Mr. Trump took office to below $60 (U.S.). Oil production is up, but largely because of improved efficiency, and it has not translated into more jobs for either the industry or the overall economy. Prices at the pump have dipped, but are nowhere near where Mr. Trump had repeatedly promised on the campaign trail. The administration has taken other actions, like keeping expensive coal-burning power plants open, cancelling permits for offshore wind projects and encouraging exports of natural gas overseas, that in combination may have helped to raise electricity and natural gas prices for U.S. consumers. Baker Institute for Public Policy's Kenneth Medlock says, "The 'Drill, baby, drill' agenda has not materialized."
