The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Jan. 9, edition that President Donald Trump seems to plan to seize and sell illicit Venezuelan oil to global buyers through major banks after ousting President Nicolas Maduro. The Globe's Rita Trichur writes that a new U.S.-Venezuela Energy Deal was announced Wednesday, allowing for the sale of up to 50 million barrels of Venezuelan crude oil and the potential lifting of some sanctions by Washington. The U.S. Department of Energy announced an agreement following the seizure of two oil tankers carrying Venezuelan crude oil under sanctions. Attorney-General Pam Bondi noted that several other vessels are also being monitored for potential capture. The U.S. government's plan to selectively lift economic restrictions to profit from Venezuelan oil is a shameless scheme that will undermine sanctions and promote lawlessness in both countries. The Globe says Canada must stand in solidarity with its own energy industry, which is poised to be hurt by U.S. shenanigans in South America, and refuse to buy even a drop of Venezuelan oil. Assurances that U.S. control of Venezuelan oil sales will also benefit allies is meaningless. The Globe calls this blatant American imperialism.
