The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Feb. 20, edition that Cenovus Energy set production records in 2025, averaging 834,000 barrels per day, despite lower commodity prices. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that is 4 per cent higher than in 2024, and excludes the roughly 100,000 barrels a day Cenovus will add to its books via MEG Energy, which it bought in October for $8.6-billion. Cenovus chief executive officer Jon McKenzie said the key to the deal was consolidating the Christina Lake oil sands area in Alberta during a Thursday earnings call. The MEG and Cenovus operations are so near each other, Mr. McKenzie previously said that "you can really throw a rock from our plant to their plant." Cenovus expects that merging the two assets will generate operational savings of at least $400-million annually by 2028. Following the deal's closure on Nov. 15, the company swiftly initiated cuts in corporate, HR and finance expenses, aiming to save $100-million to $150-million this year and next. By 2028, the combined company is expected to produce over 850,000 barrels a day from Alberta's oil sands, potentially allowing Cenovus to surpass Suncor Energy as the largest producer in the region.
