The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Feb. 22, edition that on Wednesday, Ottawa announced that it will provide an additional $15-million to law enforcement agencies for combatting auto theft. The Globe's Frederic-Xavier Duramel writes that Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc unveiled the plan in Montreal. As part of the effort, $9.1-million will be allocated to provincial, territorial and municipal police forces via a federal program aimed to enhance their ability to take control of seized stolen vehicles from the Canada Border Services Agency, Mr. LeBlanc explained. Interpol will receive an additional $3.5-million to improve global information sharing and investigative tactics in order to identify and recover stolen vehicles and parts. On Feb. 13, Canadian authorities established a connection with Interpol. Since then, 24 countries have assisted in verifying the cars currently registered in the system. According to RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, the next steps involve working with these countries to put an end to the demand for stolen vehicles. The remaining $2.4-million will be used to engage the federal government's domestic and international partners, ensuring a co-ordinated response to this issue.
