The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem said last week the recent federal budget, which added about $53-billion in new spending over five years, has not changed the government's financial path and is unlikely to effect economy in the near future. The Globe's Mark Rendell writes that Mr. Macklem said it is helpful that Ottawa has adhered to its fiscal guardrails. Mr. Macklem said, "At a macro level, there's more money going out and coming in." He also added that the government is increasing its revenues due to stronger-than-expected economic growth and an increase in capital-gains taxes for companies and wealthy individuals. He said: "On net, the fiscal track has not substantially changed relative to the fall economic statement. So different measures can have different fiscal multipliers, but first order, doesn't look like a big change." Before the budget, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland had stated that she was attempting not to make the BOC's job harder by adding to inflation, which could delay a decline in interest rates. Last year, Mr. Macklem said the pace of government spending was neither helping nor hindering the BOC's efforts to bring down inflation.
