The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Jan. 23, edition that former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney is gaining endorsements from Quebec cabinet ministers as the Liberal caucus prepares to discuss the leadership race and U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. A triple bylined item in The Globe reports that Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Employment Minister Steve MacKinnon are expected to announce their support in the coming days, joining Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly and Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, who have already backed him for the March 9 leadership vote. The Liberal caucus is meeting Thursday and Friday in Ottawa, but Mr. Carney is not invited because he is not an MP. Mr. Carney plans to meet Liberal MPs at an event off Parliament Hill, spending his days since last Thursday's leadership launch recording messages and making calls to party members. He is telling Liberals he is the best leader to challenge Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, citing his economic credentials to manage the sluggish economy and deal with Mr. Trump. Thursday is the deadline for candidates to declare their intention to run and pay the first instalment of the $350,000 entry fee.
