The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that major softwood producers with head offices in Canada say they have accounted for more than half of the growth in capacity in the U.S. South over the past decade, highlighting their American investments as the Trump administration investigates lumber imports. The Globe's Brent Jang writes that the U.S. South appeals to forestry companies because of the region's abundant timber, the Canadian government said in a 57-page filing this month to the U.S. Department of Commerce in a bid to avert tariffs. "Declining timber supply in Canada in recent years has effectively limited the ability of Canadian producers to supply the U.S. market's demand for wood products," Ottawa said in its submission. Producers with head offices and sawmills in British Columbia filed their own submissions to draw attention to their diversification into the U.S. South over the years, including investments by West Fraser Timber, Canfor and Interfor. The filings were in response to a March 1 executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump that launched a probe into the global softwood trade that could hit imports from Canada. The investigation is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
