Globe says Eby could upset Westshore's thermal coal gig

2026-08-26 07:58 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that B.C. Premier David Eby is urging Ottawa to consider retaliatory trade tactics beyond tariffs, such as nixing the purchase of American fighter jets and restricting the shipping of Montana's thermal coal through a Vancouver port. The Globe's Mike Hager quotes Mr. Eby saying Ottawa's steps to stand up to the United States have been proportionate and would afford Canadian businesses some protection. Mr. Eby said Ottawa's response is missing key elements, including revisiting the planned $12-billion purchase of Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jets. He also suggested the government should review the exporting of thermal coal from the U.S. through the Westshore port in Delta, B.C. Mr. Eby said his province plans to soon provide a list of other levers it and the feds can pull to hurt the Trump administration. Energy academics say the proposal to tax American coal or ban its export could inflict pain on Canadian employees of the terminal and the railways that ship coal. Mr. Eby said he has not talked to B.C. billionaire Jim Pattison, who owns nearly half the stock in Westshore. He made his comments a government liquor store, before shelves bereft of American alcohol.
