The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Jan. 23, edition that U.S. oil and gas producers are excited about President Trump's push for domestic energy development, but they believe his withdrawal from international climate co-operation could hurt their global investment in cleaner energy. This decision marks a rare disagreement between Mr. Trump and Big Oil, traditionally seen as a major contributor to climate change. By exiting the Paris climate deal again, Mr. Trump emphasizes U.S. commitment to boosting domestic energy production while signalling a rejection of multilateral climate efforts. U.S. oil companies believe the withdrawal limits Washington's influence on the global energy transition and exposes them to uneven regulations, according to Reuters interviews with industry representatives. Bethany Williams, a spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute -- whose members include Exxon Mobil and Chevron - said the group has "long supported the ambitions of the Paris agreement." Exxon boss Darren Woods urged the newly elected President at COP29 in Azerbaijan to keep the U.S. in the Paris Agreement, warning that exiting and re-entering would create long-term policy uncertainty for companies.
