FP says Alaska LNG revives defunct Exxon project

2025-04-10 09:27 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that Alaska LNG could compete with Canada's LNG industry for Asian buyers if built, but it faces significant challenges despite renewed interest. The Post's Meghan Potkins writes that this resurgence has been fuelled by President Trump's tariff policy, leading Asian governments to seek more American LNG in exchange for relief from U.S. duties. S&P Global Commodity Insights director Ian Archer said: "There does seem to be some momentum behind Alaska LNG that cannot be ignored. It would compete directly with Canadian LNG for the Asian market and could be a potential threat." However, he said the sheer scope of the project -- including the requirement for a new pipeline that would be nearly twice the length of Coastal Gaslink, the 670-kilometre pipeline feeding LNG Canada on British Columbia's North Coast -- could push the price tag for Alaska LNG closer to $50-billion (U.S.). Mr. Archer said, "That"s an enormous amount for nearly any private company, so it would have to be built with a combination of federal money and a corporate consortium." Former project owners Exxon Mobil, BP and Conocophillips backed out in 2016 over concerns the project was not competitive.
