The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that the world's largest corporations have caused $28-trillion (U.S.) in climate damage, according to a new study aimed at enabling individuals and governments to hold companies financially accountable. The Globe's Brent Jang writes that Dartmouth College researchers came up with the estimated pollution caused by 111 companies, with more than half of the total dollar figure coming from 10 fossil fuel providers: Saudi Aramco, Gazprom, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, BP, Shell, National Iranian Oil, Pemex, Coal India and the British Coal. For comparison, $28-trillion (U.S.) is a shade less than the sum of all goods and services produced in the United States last year. Researchers estimate that each 1 per cent of greenhouse gases released since 1990 has resulted in $502-billion (U.S.) in damage from heat alone, not accounting for costs from extreme weather like hurricanes, droughts and floods. Researchers determined that pollution from Chevron, for example, has raised the Earth's temperature by .025 C. Research head Christopher Callahan says in the past, damage caused by individual companies were lost in the noise of data, so it could not be calculated, but that has now changed.
