The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Sept. 25, edition that U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has reached out to major American refiners to discuss support for voluntary diesel export restrictions as the Trump administration seeks an alternative to a short-term ban, according to sources. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the push to enlist companies voluntarily highlights the limited options for the White House as rising fuel prices elevate inflation and impact the broader economy ahead of the crucial November midterm elections. The push to limit diesel exports may conflict with refiners' shareholders who have seen high profits this year. President Donald Trump's administration faces pressure to lower diesel prices, but aggressive actions like an export ban could disrupt refineries and raise other fuel prices, prompting a search for ways to boost domestic diesel supplies without causing other issues. Mr. Trump said on Tuesday that he supported restricting diesel exports, a move that surprised senior officials and kicked off a search for alternative measures. Mr. Wright says banning exports is a bad idea. He prefers a voluntary effort, but did not provide specifics.
